Pre-Labor Day Roadtrip Maintenance

Pre-Labor Day Roadtrip Maintenance

Are you planning on taking a Labor Day trip with the family this weekend? You are not the only one. According to AAA, nearly 35 million people will be sharing the road with you. That’s the highest volume of roadtrippers since 2008. So before you clock out of work early and pack your car with kids, pets, luggage, and snacks, make sure your car is ready for the trip.

The Chicago Tribune mentioned the top car problems that occur while on a road trip. Some of the problems that made the list are overheating, wheel problems, and a dead battery. So here is our road trip checklist to prevent any car breakdowns from ruining your weekend plans.

Many people will check the tread on their tires to see if there are any issues. This could be looking for tire bulges, not enough tread, or signs of leaking. However, we also recommend having the suspension checked since this could also cause problems with your tires. If the shocks are bad, one big pothole could cause your tire to pop from hitting your wheel well.

Also, if the wheels are not properly aligned it can cause your car to pull left or right. This means that you are constantly having to keep your car from running itself off the road. It can be quite irritating when traveling long distances.

Car Fluids

Since overheating is a common problem during roadtrips, make sure your car has all the fluids it needs to stay cool, lubricated, and corrosion free. Common car fluids to check are:

  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid
  • Coolant
  • Oil
  • Power Steering

Make sure your car doesn’t have any leaks. Even though, all your fluids are topped off at the start of your trip, your car could still overheat if there is a leak. Have your car checked for leaks or corrosion to prevent overheating.

Electrical Equipment

Technology is rapidly advancing in cars today as car companies continue to customize vehicles to meet our standards. From GPS systems, to bluetooth capabilities, to Xenon headlights, more modern electronics are being installed in our cars. The more your car becomes equipped, the more issues you could potentially have. So have your car checked for any electrical work to make sure things are functioning properly.
