What is engine coolant?

What are the different coolant types?

Most coolant has additives such as dye and anti-foaming agents. We recommend using a coolant formulated for your engine and cooling system to avoid import auto repair services. Our ASE-Certified mechanics know which of the three primary coolant types your European import needs.

Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT) – Vehicles built from 1930-1990 use IAT coolant. Designed to protect metal components of engines, IAT coolant contains phosphate and silicate, which are corrosion inhibitors. The suggested lifespan is approximately two years or 24,000 miles.

Organic Acid Technology (OAT) – European imports use OAT coolant, which uses different corrosion inhibitors than IAT. The suggested lifespan is five years or 50,000 miles.

Hybrid Organic Technology (HOAT) – HOAT protects aluminum surfaces from corrosion. If your import car has an aluminum radiator, it will respond best to HOAT coolant. It’s a blend of IAT and OAT, lasting approximately five years or 100,000+ miles. This is most of the coolant sold today.

Can you drive on low coolant?

To avoid costly import auto repair services, we recommend you don’t.

What happens when you drive on low coolant?

Air bubbles form in the coolant system causing the engine to overheat due to a significant temperature spike. The head gasket is generally the first component to go. Low coolant can also cause corrosion, damaging the radiator, water pump, thermostat, radiator cap, hoses, and other cooling system components.

How often should I replace my coolant?
